Writer’s Guidelines

Thank you for your interest in writing for NAVIGO Magazine, which is published six times a year by Partridge Hill Media.  NAVIGO’s goal is to seek out and report on adventurous and educational travel opportunities for families, and to be an advocate for family travel.  NAVIGO’s tagline is “The World is Your Classroom. Go Learn.”  Consequently, stories must capture the unique flavor of a location and inspire the reader to follow in the writer’s footsteps; and give him the resources to do so.

 Types of Articles:

Each issue is highly focused on a particular location, both US and foreign locales, and features are written from several perspectives ranging from historical, cultural (art, music, literature), industrial/commercial, and culinary to purely recreational.  Our readers are seeking independent, adventurous and educational travel opportunities accessible to their entire families.

Additional information about how to plan their own trips, as well as practical features on photography and memory preservation, tips for safe and practical travel, and education while traveling are included.  We also feature book recommendations both for enjoyment while on the road, and travel books relevant to that issue’s focus.  From time to time, we include reviews of products of interest to our readers.  These might include electronic gadgets, travel equipment and supplies, and services.  Personal interviews with families exemplifying NAVIGO’s spirit of experiential learning complete the mix.

NAVIGO also publishes unit studies on several topics that compliment the magazine’s content and offer our readers further educational opportunities that enrich their travel, and a Road Scholar’s Resource Directory that lists everything from curricula to equipment, supplies, and programs available throughout the U.S. and abroad.

  Proposals:

Most features are written by staff reporters; but freelance contributions will be entertained by published writers whose clips demonstrate a high level of skill.  Phone queries are not accepted.

An acceptable proposal will have a headline that suggests what the query is about and is supported by a strong premise and not more than one page that clearly states the author’s approach to the piece and why it is right for NAVIGO Magazine.  Queries should also clearly reflect the writer’s style.

We welcome photographic portfolios for consideration in making assignments for upcoming articles.  Photographs should be evocative and sensitive as well as informative.  They should capture the flavor and texture of their subjects.

When researching a topic, potential contributors must take care not to give the impression that they are in any way representing NAVIGO Magazine, unless they have a definite assignment.  When a contributor is assigned a piece, the terms are clearly stated in a contract.  NAVIGO purchases all rights to manuscripts.

   Length and Style:

Features range from 1,000 – 3,000 words, while departments range from 500-750 words.  The mission of NAVIGO Magazine is to inspire families to experience the world first-hand with curiosity and sensitivity.  Writers should project a spirit of discovery and an eloquence, evoking a sense of place.  It is important to capture the true flavor of the destination – peculiarities, and insights with a fresh perspective.  Especially important is good storytelling with elements of humor, surprise, color and detail.  Our readers want to feel as though they are the author’s traveling companions.  It is important to convey the heart and soul of travel, especially as a family.  Travel articles should go beyond mere logistics and inspire excitement, create anticipation; they should present each travel experience as a rich tapestry with texture and importance.
